I am a Healing Touch Certified Practitioner (HTCP) and a member of the Healing Touch Professional Association.  I have been practicing Healing Touch since 1996, and have been certified by the Healing Touch Program since 2012.   I continue to increase my skills by taking continuing education classes in energy medicine and other subjects related to my practice.  I graduated from the University of Maryland School of Nursing in 1972 and retired from active nursing in 2007.  I now volunteer as an hospice volunteer, giving Healing Touch sessions to hospice clients and caregivers, and as a support group leader for people with an autoimmune disease called Sjӧgren’s Syndrome.

What is Healing Touch?

Healing Touch (HT) is a gentle, non-invasive, complementary energy based approach to health and healing.  It is evidence based and nationally accredited.  It is being used in hospitals such as the VA hospitals, clinics, hospices, private practice, and at places such as The Spring Yoga and Natural Health Center.  It is being taught all over the world.

All healing is self-healing.  Healing Touch involves facilitating your innate (inborn) ability to heal through energy work and by forming a partnership with you to help you determine, and work towards, your goals.  This is done in a caring and confidential environment, and is done at a pace that is comfortable for you.  We also explore ways you can continue the effects of the energy work between sessions and after the sessions are completed.  This may include the teaching of one or more Healing Touch techniques that you can use on yourself.

HT can be used at any stage of life, from in-utero through the dying process.

What is Energy Work?

Our 5 senses (touch, taste, hearing, seeing, smelling), keep us aware of our physical body and surrounding environment.  However, most of us are not aware that we also have energy that flows through and around our body.    Called the energy system, it has its own anatomy and is the energy that supports, nourishes and sustains the physical, emotional, mental and spiritual aspects of ourselves.  It is called by many names such as prana, qi (chi), spirit, subtle energy.  The healing traditions of many cultures emphasize the importance of subtle energy systems and stress that balancing these energy fields can assist the body, mind and spirit in moving towards and maintaining wellness.  In Healing Touch, this energy work is done by correcting disturbances, such as blockages and leaks, and energizing your energy system.

Description of a Session

Healing Touch is done with you fully clothed, usually lying down on a massage table, although I can modify your position if this is uncomfortable for you.  Typical sessions begin with a brief discussion (I do an in-depth consultation on your first visit).  I then assess your energy field noting any disturbances and choose one or more Healing Touch techniques that are appropriate for your needs.  This may include light physical touch or working in your energy field above your body to bring the flow of your energy field back into balance and harmony.  This facilitates physical, emotional, mental and spiritual health and healing.  A feedback discussion will follow.   Lastly, we explore ways to continue the energy work  mentioned above.

Because the work can be done completely off the body, it is ideal for people who prefer not to be touched.

People have many different responses to Healing Touch.  Some clients feel nothing at all.  Others describe sensations of moving energy, deep relaxation, increased sense of well-being and peace, decreased or elimination of pain, feelings of being supported and nurtured, or have visions of images and colors.  Some patients experience an emotional release such as tears; some have what they consider to be a spiritual experience or they may develop insight into specific areas of their lives.  Many have reported positive experiences that have helped them better cope with illness, medical protocols for treatment of medical conditions and depression but I can make no specific claims regarding the results you may experience from a Healing Touch session.

Benefits of Healing Touch

Recent research studies suggest that Healing Touch is effective for:
•    physical and mental relaxation
•    increasing mental clarity and focus
•    pain management
•    anxiety and stress reduction
•    increasing one’s sense of vitality and/or sense of well-being
•    accelerating healing from injury, medical procedures and surgery

Healing Touch, along with other energy therapies, is still being researched by traditional science, and currently has no known detrimental side effects.

My Journey

I took my first HT class in 1996 and felt like I had “come home”.  I used this skill to help my patients while working in hospitals.   In 2003, I had a viral infection that left me so weak I could not walk 8 steps without becoming severely short of breath.  I could not focus or concentrate, had “brain fog” and profound fatigue.  I had to stop working, and was no longer able to give Healing Touch sessions.
Getting doctors and people to believe that I was ill was difficult.   It took years before I was finally diagnosed with Sjӧgren’s Syndrome.  It’s called an invisible illness because you look normal even though it is causing inflammation and damage inside your body.
Once diagnosed, Traditional Western Medicine had little to offer me.  I went back to my Healing Touch roots and started Healing Touch sessions as a client.  They were extremely helpful for me in dealing with my symptoms, increasing my quality of life, and in coping with the changes I had to make in my life.  My energy increased, my “brain fog” and fatigue decreased.  I was able to start a support group for people with Sjӧgren’s Syndrome and become a hospice volunteer.  I decided to pursue certification in Healing Touch, something I always wanted to do but didn’t have the time to do between raising a family and work.  More recently, I started a private practice.
This was not an easy journey, so I understand the frustrations and physical, emotional, mental and/or spiritual rollercoaster that you may be dealing with.  Yes, I still have Sjӧgren’s with all its ups and downs, but Healing Touch has helped me develop tools that I fall back on to get me through those periods.

Disclaimer:  I do not diagnose or treat disease and I am not a physician.  These sessions are not a substitute for diagnosis or treatment from a qualified health practitioner for illness, injuries, or other medical conditions.  My services are not licensed by the state of Maryland.  My practice is guided by the Healing Touch Code of Ethics and Standards of Care.
